Take Care of a Scar

How to Take Care of a Scar When a Cut is Healed

Scars are your body's natural response to a cut or wound to the skin. Scar tissue protects a hurt area as it heals. While some scars fade when the wound is fully healed, others remain. Heredity, general health, and other factors play a role in how each person scars. Whether your scar is simply a discoloration or a thick, raised area called a hypertrophic scar, there are several treatments available to reduce the appearance of the scar or remove it entirely.

1. Use vitamin E oil. Vitamin E oil is a natural substance that many doctors recommend for reducing scars. Dr. Joel Studin, in his article "Scarring" on his Web Plastics website, says that vitamin E oil breaks down the fibers that create the scar tissue. Vitamin E oil is inexpensive and easily found so it is worth a try.

2. Try cocoa butter. Cocoa butter is mostly recommended by doctors and lay people to treat stretch marks, but many people report having good results with other types of scars also. Cocoa butter melts at body temperature and thus penetrates the skin deeply. Cocoa butter is another inexpensive product you can find in most drugstore or health food stores.

3.  Use over-the-counter scar treatment products.. There are many products on the market that treat scars. Look for products containing Cepalin and hydrocortisone.

 4.  Use bleaching creams. Bleaching creams, containing hydroquinone, are useful for scars that are darker than your skin tone. Other helpful substances are lotions and creams made with kojic acid or glycolic acid, as suggested by the Mayo Clinic in its article "Age Spots." A doctor can prescribe an ointment or cream with a high concentration of hydroquinone or other bleaching agent.

 5.  Seek medical treatment. The Cleveland Clinic, in the article "Chemical Peels, Laser Resurfacing, Dermabrasion," suggests these three methods for the best results. Chemical peels use an acid to burn off the top layer of skin. Dermabrasion uses a wire brush to sand off the top layer of skin. Laser therapy uses a beam of infrared light on the scar. When the skin heals after any of these treatments, it is less damaged and the scar less noticeable.
